Welcome to the Sydney Wearable Art Gala 2026.
This year, our theme is:
Step into a realm where perfection is imagined, challenged, and re‑designed.
UTOPIA invites creators to explore the idea of an ideal world blossoming within an imperfect place - one where harmony, innovation, and ambition collide. But beneath every shining surface lies the question:
What could possibly go wrong?
The 2026 categories are:
Category 1
OFF GRID
Recycle, reuse, up-scale & repurpose.
Wearable art with a focus on saving the planet through sustainability.
Create your wearable art by hunting and gathering textiles and materials.
What will it look like when the grid collapses, and what does your ultimate sustainable existence look like?
Work in this category must be created using pre-loved, pre-used material, offcuts and scraps, and discarded by-products of industrial production that would otherwise become landfill. Product can be sourced from recycling centres and sustainable suppliers like Reverse Garbage or from op-shops and thrift stores but must not be purchased new.
Category 2
TAKE FLIGHT
Is it a bird, is it plane or is it a...?
Look UP and be inspired by what is above us.
What happens above the clouds and who lives there? Spread your wings, inflate your balloon, warm up your jet pack and fly free, unshackled by the limitations of gravity.
In this category the clouds, storms, moons and stars are your playground. Let your imagination drift upwards and create wearable art that captures the freedom of flight. Your vision may be Inspired by nature or industry, but we want to look up and see something incredible.
Take flight! It’s time to ascend and soar!
Category 3
DREAMS+NIGHTMARES
Millinery – Headworks
This category is for Wearable Art that is supported by the head.
Design unconventional headpieces using unconventional materials to create abstract shapes and forms that represent the dream-world of the subconscious.
What perfect world do you dream of? What unspeakable horrors are waiting for you in your nightmares? Escape from reality and show us where you go when you dream.
As you drift off to sleep, explore the surreal and subliminal cosmos within your mind, and take the dream-world OUT of your head, and put it ON to your head.
Category 4
LIFE AQUATIC
Undersea Worlds
Escape the madness of the dry world, and explore the wet nirvana that lies beneath the waves. What new world is waiting under the water? What and who is suspended in the shallows, the shoreline and the abyss? What damp mysteries will you find in the deep blue of the ocean? Will it be tempestuous or serene? Bioluminescent or inky black?
For this category the creatures, the coral, plants, and the water itself should all be used as inspiration for your wearable art.
Important Note: For safety reasons wearable art creations must be dry, and can only simulate water on stage.
Category 5
FUTURA EMPIRE
Enter a new paradigm where the imperial elite exert dominance over a controlled society.
What does it look like when the future is shaped by intelligence, systems, and control. Futura Empire explores a society where the ruling authority maintains a specific vision of utopia, and enforces order, safety, and progress through surveillance, enforcement, and optimisation.
For this category you must design wearable art inspired by futuristic, Space-age governance, orbital stations, off-world colonies, regulated bodies, and speculative authority.
Experimental designers like Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana or Iris Van Herpen may be your influence as you look into the future and ask the question:
Is freedom, freedom from choice?
Category 6
ENHANCED BODY
What is your ideal human body?
What enhancements and changes can we make to the body in pursuit of perfection?
What is biological perfection? Aesthetic beauty? Physical size and strength? Are the traditional expectations of the body still the same as they once were? What does the human body lack, and what new challenges do we need to evolve to meet? Is the ideal body recognisable? Does it borrow animal traits and features? Does the enhanced body have interchangeable replacement organs? Or does it not need any at all?
Use imagination and technology to distort, deform and enhance the body. What Wearable additions can you generate to transform and complete the human form?
Remember that improvements come in many forms: consider enhanced external and internal parts, adding extended and extra limbs, or removing unnecessary ones.
